Toasting a slice of bread takes no time at all! Do you have a toaster in your home but rarely use it due to a lack of inspiration? Then you’ve come to the right place. There are countless combinations you can think of for toppings on toasted bread. In this article, we share our favorite recipes for toasted bread. Get the toaster out!

Healthy things for on bread

On our blog we focus on homemade food, which is therefore automatically a lot healthier than pre-packaged food from the supermarket. Here are our healthy recommendations for on bread:

Hummus on toast

Who doesn’t love creamy hummus? Contrary to what many people think, hummus is incredibly easy to prepare. The quickest way is to use canned chickpeas, but of course you can also buy and cook dry chickpeas yourself. This just requires a little more planning.

This is our favorite hummus recipe. If you want to add a little more flavor, we have some tips for toppings:

  • Finely chopped cilantro or basil leaves
  • Smoked paprika
  • Roasted cashews (do chop into small pieces)
  • Roasted or fresh tomato
  • Finely chopped arugula
  • Boiled or fried egg

Hummus stays good in the refrigerator for about 3 – 4 days.

Mashed avocado

A classic, but very tasty and very easy to prepare. Mash a ripe avocado with a fork and add a little salt and pepper to season it. If you have time to spare, add a chopped red onion with a little lime juice.

A fried or poached egg is also highly recommended. Tip: mash a boiled egg along with the avocado – a more luxurious version of an egg salad.

Tip: sautéed mushrooms with garlic is a delicious addition as a topping.

Homemade Jam

A toasted sandwich with a little butter and jam, delicious! Homemade jam is easy to prepare, lasts a long time and is tastier and healthier than the ready-made jams in the supermarket. You get the best results with fresh fruit, but you can also opt for frozen fruit – though this often makes the jam a little less solid because of the extra moisture. Put the fruit on the stove, add a little water and some sugar of your choice. Coconut sugar is recommended or white sugar for a neutral taste.

Tip: while cooking, add a stick of cinnamon, anise and/or cloves.

Bruschetta style

Bruschetta is extremely easy to prepare and has countless combinations. Delicious as a salad with basil on toasted bread. Also very healthy! Below is our recipe for a bruschetta salad on bread:

  • Finely chopped tomato and/or roasted tomato
  • Finely chopped basil
  • Italian herbs
  • Balsamic dressing
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Optional: mozzarella cheese
  • Salt & pepper

Pesto

For me, there is nothing better than pesto on bread! But using my own recipe. Many of the pestos I’ve tried were too thin in my opinion or barely tasted like basil. Below is my favorite recipe for pesto:

  • Italian Basil
  • Clove of garlic
  • Toasted cashews (or pine nuts)
  • Little bit of cayenne pepper
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Optional: parmesan cheese
  • Little bit of water until you find the right texture

I like a firm texture; so you can taste the basic chile well. You get this texture by adding plenty of nuts; personally, toasted cashews are my favorite. If, like me, you like a little crunch, add the last bit of nuts at the end of blending.

Homemade tomato sauce

Fried egg in homemade tomato sauce on a toasted bun is one of my favorite combinations. This requires some planning because the tomatoes need to be on the stove for quite a long time. But the recipe itself is very easy. The longer you cook the tomatoes, the more flavorful your tomato sauce will be. Here is my favorite recipe:

  • fresh and ripe tomatoes (not too ripe, because then the tomato sauce will be a little too sweet)
  • Chopped onion
  • Basil leaves
  • Italian dry herbs or fresh thyme
  • Coconut milk or good tablespoon of cream
  • Optional: chorizo
  • Salt & pepper

Tip: The skin of a tomato is high in fiber, but less pleasant to chew. Remove it by making a small cut in the tomato and putting it in hot water for a minute. Then you remove the skin in no time.

You store the tomato sauce in the refrigerator. Before serving, warm it up in a small pan on the stove. If you want to fry an egg, make a hole in the tomato sauce for the egg.

My conclusion: what is good on toast?

So much is possible with toasted bread! And it’s not nearly as hard as most think; especially when you know how to plan it cleverly. Make some hummus, pesto or tomato sauce on Sundays and the rest of the week you can prepare a healthy lunch with little effort. You can also keep the salad for the bruschetta in the fridge for 2 – 3 days.
