In more and more households we see the deep fryer disappearing for the air fryer, it is gaining ground on a large scale.  The main reasons are that it is a lot healthier, and preparing recipes in it is often very tasty too. The latest recipes that require fries often refer to this appliance. This means that the Airfryer is being picked up by more and more families. Are you also wondering what exactly are the differences between fries from the Airfryer and regular fries from a traditional fryer? I take you through the most important details!

Chips from the ”hot air fryer”

More and more people are frying chips from the so-called ”hot-air fryer”, nice and easy! Because they are easier to keep clean. How do you make the tastiest chips for your hot-air fryer? Baking the tastiest chips for the convection fryer or the oven is easier said than done. Fries should obviously taste good, and above all they should also be nice and crispy.

Many go to the snack bar for chips, but what if we told you that you can make them much tastier at home? Home-made chips always taste best.

We will be happy to tell you all about homemade chips as a tasty alternative to chips from the deep fryer.

No oil, no additional fat

The big advantage is also that you don’t need oil to fry the chips. You can fry fries with different types of oil. Most people choose sunflower oil or olive oil. An additional advantage is that without the intervention of oil you can clean the hot-air fryer a lot easier.

Frying chips from a deep fryer can be quite tasty, but by preparing them with hot air you create a meal with significantly less fat.

A lot healthier! The hot air fryer still fries chips nice and golden brown and crispy.

Chips specially made for the hot air fryer

There are chips specially made for the convection fryer. You can buy these in the supermarket. Regular fries can also be prepared in a convection fryer, but you have to let them sit a little longer.

Often these chips are not as tasty as chips made especially for the hot air fryer, they tend to be a lot drier.

Fry fries from the oven, also from the convection fryer?

In addition, crispy oven fries are also a good option for the hot air fryer.

In fact, these tasty oven chips also taste great from the convection fryer, and compared to other options, they often contain fewer calories.

Better not as a snack

What we do want to point out is that it is wiser to really prepare chips as a main dish, not as a snack.

If you love fries but want to keep it within limits, it is best to have fries only for dinner.

If you don’t like fries enough to scoop up portions that fully satisfy your appetite, just serve your fries alongside another dish. There are plenty of recipes where fries are very tasty as a compliment.

An oven recipe you just make from the Airfryer!

So you can prepare oven chips (and often any other oven recipe such as meat or fish) in the air fryer.

Oven fries are often seen as the tastiest option for the hot air fryer when we talk about available options that you buy from the supermarket and thus do not prepare entirely yourself. So how do you best prepare oven fries in the convection fryer?

Not too much at once

It is especially important not to put too many oven chips in the convection fryer at once. They won’t get enough room to crisp up properly.

Does the quantity of potatoes not fit? Then you will have to fry them an extra time. Better not stack them! That will make the chips sticky.

How many chips are enough?

For a family with two adults and two children, 1.5 kg fries is enough. Of course, there are people who eat less and for them this will be too much. You can just try 1.5 kilos and see how you come out.

You can also make delicious chips yourself!

Of course, you can prepare dishes with chips you buy from the supermarket, but what you can also do is make your own chips! After all, you can make your own chips just fine. Home-made chips are often the tastiest. You don’t need much for this either.

The ingredients you need are:

  • 1.5 kg of crumbly potatoes
  • Mayonnaise
  • A good pinch of salt

Step 1: Peel and slice the potatoes

First, peel the potatoes and cut them in half lengthwise. Then lay the two halves on their sides. Again, cut the potato twice lengthwise.

Then hold the potato cut together and flatten it, then cut it in half twice again.

Step 2: Place the potatoes in cold running water

It is important to repeat this exactly with all potatoes. Next, preheat the hot-air fryer to 200 degrees.

Then put the potatoes in a pan with cold water.

Step 3: Boiling the potatoes

Next, bring the potatoes to a boil.

A potato in this state cooks in about 10 minutes. The potatoes should be really well done, but they should also just barely break.

Step 4: Drying

When you have finished cooking the potatoes, drain them and then let them cool briefly. After that, let them dry well.

You usually get potatoes properly dry by dabbing them on kitchen paper or a clean tea towel.

Do this carefully to make sure the potatoes don’t break!

Step 5: In the hot air fryer

When the hot air fryer is well warm at 200 degrees Celsius then place the potatoes in the basket. Shake well to make sure there is something stuck together and spread them well. Otherwise the fries won’t get crispy. Bake the fries for between 15 and 20 minutes.

After about 15 to 20 minutes, go and check if the fries are well done.

Enjoy your meal first and only then rinse off the basket of the hot air fryer! It should of course cool down properly first.

Step 6: Enjoy your meal!

Remove the chips from the basket, sprinkle with a good pinch of salt and serve immediately. Enjoy your meal!

Extra tip: eat the chips with homemade mayonnaise, which is highly recommended! You can also use mayonnaise for a variety of other recipes.

Besides, homemade fries also taste really good with applesauce!

All in all, the whole process takes about half an hour. Do you have any leftover chips? Then you can freeze them well-wrapped. After all, you can use them for other tasty recipes too!

Always use floury potatoes

Another handy tip, always use floury/spicy potatoes for making fries. These are rich in starch, and for fries, you need that. You can very well use Bintjes or Friedlander potatoes for this. For large fries, you might want to go for Bonkers.

Frequently asked questions

There are a number of frequently asked questions about preparing fries in the hot air fryer, so we’d like to go over these with you.

Preheat the deep fryer to 200 degrees Celsius, then put them in the deep fryer for 15 to 20 minutes.

Which chips fit best in the convection fryer?

In principle, all types of chips fit in the hot air fryer. However, fries that you normally fry in oil will often taste less tasty from this deep fryer, they will be slightly drier than from oil.

There are special fries made for the convection fryer, oven fries also taste very good from the convection fryer.

Do you like them fresh? Then just do it yourself with your own ingredients. Making chips is not difficult, and here you don’t need many more ingredients than the right potatoes, salt and mayonnaise.
